"El Oasis"
1998-2000
A primary school made out of cardboard

El Oasis, located in Ciudad Bolivar (Southern Bogota) was our first project.
Following several months of research around the more remote areas of
Ciudad Bolivar , Laudes Infantis helped the community to establish a primary
school (La Escuelita).

Our objective was to empower the community through educational, artistic and
recreational activities and to facilitate an opportunity for children unable to afford
public school system. We successfully accomplished our objective by establishing
"La Escuelita", now a recognized primary school by the Ministry of Education, offering 2
half-day classes to approximately 300 children.

Our Activities:

  • Provided school with funds to acquire the plot of land (or "lote") on which it is built.

  • Helped to move school infrastructure to this permanent location.

  • Provided school with educational and school materials.

  • Facilitated teacher's training in various educational institutions in the following
    courses:

    • Community and social integration
    • Education-Psychology (with an emphasis on emotional stress created
      through displacement and violence)
    • Computer science

  • Organized year-end vacation workshops (1999-2000) for a period of three months:
theater, puppet theater, juggling, handicrafts, and children's rights.
Funding:

Laudes funded this project mainly with the income of the school and community leaders.
Private donations helped towards developing the infrastructure.
The school charges a minimum tuition (Colombian pesos $3000=US$1.50 per month) to help
with maintenance and administrative costs. Click here to donate!
